Access Statement


The Fortescue Inn is situated near the seafront on the high street, in the historic town of Salcombe. Enjoy a relaxing drink, we offer many cask ales from a local brewery, and sample our good quality food in our bar or restaurant where we offer the best of local produce. There is access to the pub up a ramp or over the curb.

The nearest railway station is Totnes, which is 19 miles away (a 40 minute taxi ride). Taxis are available at the station. If you require an accessible taxi this can be booked in advance, see Contact Information below for details.

There is a bus from Totnes to Kingsbridge which takes approximately 40 minutes, Tally Ho! Bus No.164

The nearest bus stop is 0.2 miles from the pub - Shadycombe Road. There is a shelter with seating. All buses can accommodate one Class 1 or 2 wheelchair, Class 3 wheelchair will not fit. The Tally Ho! No. 606 bus runs to Kingsbridge, every hour Monday – Saturday from approximately 8am to 630pm and takes approximately half an hour. There is no bus service on Sundays or bank holidays

The main road outside the pub where the main entrance is situated has a narrow pavement that is uneven in places.

Car Parking and Arrival

There is free parking for hotel customers only in The Creek Car Park on Gould Road from 1st April to 30th September and Shadycombe Car Park from 1st October to 31st March. There is a permit available to be collected from the Inn but these are not reserved and we cannot guarantee a space.

The Creek Car Park 50.240991,-3.76800 is situated on Gould Road, has 242 parking spaces and is 0.4 miles from the Inn, there is a flat access through Island Street and along Victoria Quay. The car park surface leading is tarmac with no kerbs.

Shadycombe Car Park 50.239460,-3.770061 is situated on Shadycombe Road, has 69 parking spaces and is 0.2 miles from the Inn over a small hill, there is a flat access through Island Street and along Victoria Quay. The car park surface leading is tarmac with no kerbs.

Whitestrand Car Park 50.237876,-3.767060 is situated on Fore Street, has 21 parking spaces and is 0.1 miles from the Inn, a flat walk along Fore Street. The car park surface is tarmac with no kerbs.

Park and Ride/Walk 50.239873,-3.778256

The Park and ride is seasonal and situated 0.6 miles up a steep hill from The Inn. The Park and Walk operates all year, please see website for details

The car park is well lit at night.

Customers can be dropped off at the pub entrance on the corner of Fore Street and Union Street or at the corner of Market Street and Fore Street by the Butcher shop.

Union Street is a dead end. The best way to turn your car around is to turn right into Union Street, reverse into the space in front of the steps and turn right back the way you came into Fore Street

There is an 80mm curb leading to the main entrance and a short ramp 1:4 gradient to the side entrance with a step down into the pub. A portable ramp is available.

The main entrance is 810mm wide and side entrance doors 780mm wide are manual; both are light to pull and open outwards.

Bar & Bar Area and Dining Area/Restaurant

The bar and restaurant are situated on the ground floor. Entry to the restaurant is by a short ramp via the bar with a 1:5 gradient

Drinks can also be served at the table on request

There are bar stools in the bar area. Both the bar and the restaurant have a mixture of upright chairs with and without arms and tables are well spaced apart, with a clear height from the floor of 710mm.

Lighting is natural daylight supplemented with overhead and wall lighting. Candles are lit on tables in the restaurant.

There is a TV in the Ships Bar area. Sound is only activated for major sport or other events. Subtitles are always shown on request

There is background music throughout the Inn.

The flooring is Quarry tiles in the main bar and restaurant with rugs, The Ships Bar area is Wooden Parquet with entrance mats and a rug under the Pool table.

We do our best to cater for any dietary requirements; please contact us in advance with any specific requests.

Where possible all our food produce is locally sourced.

In the bar area, food is ordered at the bar and brought to tables. The restaurant is table service. Breakfast is table service with a cereal, fruit, yoghurt and pastry buffet; however, staff can assist on request.

Large print menus are available. Specials of the day are shown on a blackboard. All staff can assist by running through menus with you.

There is a pool table, table football and games machine in The Ships bar.

Customer Toilets

Customer toilets can be found on the ground floor to the rear of the bar. Access is via one 140mm step from the main bar and restaurant areas and one 110mm step from The Ships Bar followed by the same 140mm step. Toilet entry described below:

Entrance doors 720mm wide to the toilets.

No transfer space to the sides of the toilets.

Toilet height is 480mm in the Gents and 400mm in the Ladies.

Vertical rails either side of both toilets.

Beer Garden/Outdoor Area/Smoking area

The Beer Garden is open all year round. A sheltered designated smoking area is available.

The Beer Garden is situated to the rear of the pub; the smoking area is to the side.

Access to these areas is available at the rear of the pub where there is one 170mm step. Access is available externally via a short ramp.

The entrance/exit door leading to the outdoor areas is glass with markings and lever handle. It is 780mm wide.

The beer garden and smoking areas are flat.

The beer garden has Patio tiles. A wide path runs through the centre of the beer garden giving easy access to tables either side.

There are picnic tables with a clear height from the floor of 670mm.

Drinks and food can be ordered and served at the table on request.

Accommodation - Bedrooms

On the first floor there are 6 rooms with double beds that are reached by 13 stairs only.

Entrance to Garden Room and Room 6 is external, both up 13 stairs

2 rooms also have double sofa beds (Garden and 6), 2 of the rooms have single chair beds (3 and Stella)

Doors are 730mm wide.

Furniture can be easily removed or rearranged

Height of all of the beds from the top of the mattress to the floor is 550mm

Rooms are bright and evenly lit. Overhead lighting is controlled by a dimmer switch. Bedside lamps are also in each room.

All of our bedrooms offer the following: Lighting as above, good colour contrast between the floor, walls and doors, all bedding is feather, Non feather is available on request) widescreen digital television with remote control, subtitles, and audio description facilities.

Accommodation - Bathrooms & Toilets Ensuite

All rooms have en-suite bathrooms. Door opening to the bathrooms is 730mm except Garden Room which is 590mm.

A level entry, step free shower

The toilet height is 440mm

The wash basin height is 950mm

Lever taps on the washbasin and bath. Stella room has turn taps on the washbasin

Well lit with overhead lights and a light over mirror

Good colour contrast between the doors, floor, walls and towels. Non-slip laminate flooring

In all the double rooms the shower is separate. All bathrooms have good colour contrast as above.

Accommodation Public Areas

The stairs and landing are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights. The corridor to the bedrooms is lit by ceiling lights and is slightly dimmer.

Corridors are a minimum 780mm wide and the floor covering is laminate with rugs and mats.

From the reception there are 13 steps, a landing to Rooms 1, 2, 3 and a further 1 step to Stella Room on the flat external roof.

Additional Information

We have a set of evacuation procedures – should you require assistance someone will help you with evacuation either out of the building or to a refuge.

We welcome well behaved dogs. A water bowl is available just outside the main entrance and one can be supplied for bedrooms where necessary.
